OCTOBER MEETING with Documentary "The Whaler"

--Waco Friends of the Climate monthly meeting will be the 3rd rather than 4th Tuesday because of library availability. Meeting is Tuesday, October 17, 6pm, at the South Waco Library, 2737 S. 18th St., Waco, 76706.
--Business meeting will cover recent FOC campaigns and discuss future campaigns, including signup of volunteers.
--Documentary for October is "The Whaler," a 50 min., Aug. 2023 film from Iceland, by Director Phillipe Blanc. The film synopsis states: "Whaling thrives in Iceland despite a worldwide ban. In 2022, Iceland killed 160 Fin whales, the second largest animal in the world, despite the international whaling commission (IWC) deeming it an endangered species and banning its hunting worldwide. This documentary delves into the violations of international regulations, ghost ships and omertà behind a lucrative business aimed at Japan, which still utilizes archaic and cruel methods of hunting these majestic creatures. " It is very disturbing to learn that these huge, beautiful and endangered animals are still slaughtered.
--In addition, we highlight the ongoing triple crises of climate, biodiversity collapse, and plastic pollution. A positive feedback is noted between biodiversity loss and the climate crisis. For example, as heatwaves kill some huge trees in our forest, the Carbon stored in their tissues is released into the atmosphere, worsening planetary heating, and creating more dangerous conditions for the trees, leading to more tree loss.
