About

Waco Friends of the Climate

Recent History

Since 2012, Waco Friends of the Climate focuses on fighting anthropogenic climate change through direct action and education. We host meetings most months, which consist of a business session with free vegan pizza/pasta/salad buffet, followed by a climate-related documentary or lecture. During the COVID-19 pandemic era, we held Zoom meetings and other virtual activities.

Our work has centered on the understanding that anthropogenic climate change is an existential threat, and the most critical issue facing mankind. To distinguish this from normal cyclical changes in the climate, we prefer the term “climate crisis, breakdown, or chaos.”

History of our Name

In 2002, the organization Waco Friends of Peace was formed by Skip Londos, Kay Lucas, and others, in opposition to the Iraq War. For 10 years the organization worked at the Crawford Peace House, staffing the House and caring for the grounds. The Peace House provided the infrastructure for the massive protests which arose around activist Cindy Sheehan. Our members protested at the checkpoint of the Bush Ranch each time George Bush was in Crawford, Texas. We also protested Bush’s torture regime with simulated waterboarding in front of the federal courthouse. We continued to work for peace in remembrance after one of our founders, Kay Lucas, passed away from lung disease.

With the presidency of Barack Obama and the winding down of wars, we transitioned our work to the climate crisis in 2012. Skip had moved on to other endeavors, and Alan Northcutt, MD, became director of the organization. We recognized that climate change was mankind’s greatest danger. We also transitioned our well-known name to Waco Friends of Peace/Climate. And finally, in the spring of 2020, we changed our name to the current Waco Friends of the Climate, to clearly reflect our mission statement.

Alan D. Northcutt, MD
