Earth Day 2023: FREE Cedar Elm Trees

Waco Friends of the Climate will host its 3rd giveaway of seedlings, this event a celebration of Earth Day 2023. Five hundred  Cedar Elm seedlings will be given away on a first come-first served basis, at Waco Downtown Farmers Market. The cedar elm is a large deciduous tree, which is native to Central Texas, and grows to 50-90 feet height. The tree tolerates multiple soil types and is drought tolerant, especially important in this time of the climate crisis and drought in Waco.

With each seedling an information sheet will be given, containing planting and care instructions, and carbon sequestration data. In addition, a business card will be distributed, containing our organization contact information, and 15 actions individuals may take to combat the climate crisis.

We encourage everyone to accept a free cedar elm and plant it and care for it. Trees sequester from 10 kilograms to 31 kilograms of carbon each year, averaged over the lifetime of the tree. Forests are vital in removing CO2 from the atmosphere.

Tree planting may be the first action, which may lead to other steps to combat the climate crisis. The science is clear that to preserve a livable climate, action at all levels is vital, from individuals to cities to states to regions to nations.

"Climate Crisis is Here" yard signs will also be available, free of charge.
