April 2022 Update
MAY 2022 MEETING
After about 2 years without meetings, it appears to be safe to resume
live FOC meetings. Our best option at this moment appears to be a meeting
room in one of the McLennan County Library branches. We have decided that
we could not in good conscience continue to meet at Poppa Rollos. As soon
as we have a date and time, an email with full details will be sent to
everyone. Please send any suggestions you might have about meetings to
anorthc@aol.com.
CHALK WACO, MAY 14-15
The Friends of the Climate has long attempted to do a climate mural in
downtown Waco to raise awareness of the climate crisis. And now, the Waco
Chalk event will provide that opportunity. For our $1000, we are teamed
with a local artist, to produce a 10'X10' chalk mural that will remain in place
for 1 year. Right now we are working with outstanding artist, Susan
Sistrunk, on a design, and she has ordered the needed supplies. We are
fortunate to be working with Susan on this project, as she is a well respected
artist in Waco, and she loves doing environmental pieces. Be certain to
check out the chalk event and see our newly created artwork.
MORE FREE TREES OCT-JAN
The Earth Day event was so successful that we are strongly considering
another similar event, during Fall planting. We are currently
looking for a tree species that would be very popular, along with an
appropriate date at the Farmer's Market. And this will be another very
rewarding volunteer opportunity for our members. Please pay
attention to coming emails & grab one of those volunteer slots.
5th ANNUAL CLIMATE CRISIS ART EXHIBIT
The exhibit will continue until approx. June 7. We have had 947
unique visitors, with a goal of 1,000. So please help promote the show to
friends, colleagues, or family members who have not enjoyed the exhibit yet.
Help us reach the amazing goal of 1.000 visitors. Remember that the
website is: climatecrisisartexhibit.org.
SUSTAINABILITY CONFERENCE, SEPT 13, 14, 17
A sustainability conference, similar to the one held in Waco several years ago is being planned. We may have an opportunity to speak on the climate crisis, but details are not yet available. More information will follow.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: IRONMAN TRIATHLON WACO, OCT 15-16
A good friend of our group has asked for volunteers from the FOC for
this event. In the spirit of cooperation with other activists, we agreed
to this, and now ask our members to consider volunteering. Along the
routes, many volunteers are needed, as you know. This is a worthy event
for the FOC to support, its fun, and its good PR for the organization. If
you can help out on 1 or 2 days, please email Alan at anorthc@aol.com.
GO RENEWABLE WACO: THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES
All members should realize that our efforts to push the City of Waco to
take climate mitigating action never stops. EV purchases continue at a
snail's pace, and solar panels were installed on the new 25th street Fire
Station. At 90% of City Council meetings and Sustainability Board
meetings, we have a presence. We remind the City of the climate
crisis, the latest IPCC reports, and why the City needs to take robust
action. Progress is slow, but
the City will hear our voices of science.
