The Waco Friends of the Climate quarterly Styrofoam collection for recycling, July 11, 2021

Thanks to Wacoans for their continued tremendous response to our Styrofoam Recycling Program. People arrived as early as 12 noon. We had lines of up to 15 cars, and we nearly completely filled 3 U-Haul trucks.

Deepest thanks to our dedicated volunteers. A total of 12 members volunteered today, a record during Styrofoam collections:  Travis Hipp, Rafael, Tom Rinard, a new member, Matt Helton, Harrison Ward, Sarah Hornyak, Harry Moore, Kandi (Ana), Deven, Alan, and Nancy Marquis (not pictured). With the heat index up to 101F, the hard, sweaty effort of all volunteers was appreciated.

Thanks to those driving U-Haul trucks to Waxahachie July 12:  Travis Hipp, Jack Bowers and Alan.

To increase the climate impact of this event, we provided a flyer to almost every car, explaining how to select a 100% renewable energy plan for home power. We encouraged our styro foam donors to make this change and to email Alan if they do select clean electricity. Only one person refused a flyer.

Additional thanks to our Styrofoam donors who also donated cash and checks, totaling $325, a big help in defraying the cost of 3 U-Haul trucks.

Of course, a ban on Styrofoam, as is in place now in California, Maine, Maryland, and Vermont, would be preferable. Since a ban is not likely in Texas soon, recycling is the next best avenue.

The connection of Styrofoam recycling to the climate crisis: plastic production and plastic degradation release significant GHGs into the atmosphere. A lighter carbon footprint will result from styrofoam recycling.

Our next styrofoam recycling event is anticipated for mid-October 2021.

We were gratified that one gentleman drove from Temple to recycle his styrofoam. Also, he noted that although styrofoam recycling is available in Austin it would cost $45.

We would like to confirm that our collected styrofoam is definitely processed through a densifier and recycled, and that we make no profit from this process.
