"STOP DAPL: Wells Fargo Defund Now" Saturday Protest

The following is a February 10th press release:

Waco, Tx.--The Waco Friends of Peace/Climate will sponsor a protest entitled "STOP DAPL: Wells Fargo Defund Now.", Saturday, February 11, at Wells Fargo Bank, 1105 Wooded Acres, Waco, Tx 76710.  The protest will occur from 11am until 1pm in  front of the bank.

This week President Trump ordered the Army Corps of Engineers to halt their ongoing Environmental Impact Statement and authorize the easement to allow Energy Transfer Partners to complete construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota.  The Waco Friends of Peace/Climate and environmental organizations around the country, including the Sierra Club, Greenpeace, and Friends of the Earth, are outraged by these actions and strongly oppose renewed construction of this pipeline for these reasons:
  • United States promises to the Standing Rock Sioux to complete the Environment Impact    Statement have been broken.
  • Appropriate and necessary evaluation of the environmental impact of the project has not been completed.
  • Sacred burial sites of the Sioux will be further disrespected.By drilling under water, the pipeline risks damage to the critical water supply of the Sioux and of millions of citizens downstream.
  • Pipeline spills will definitely occur.  In the past month, 2 spills happened, not far from the site of DAPL.
  • Pipeline spill records: over the past 20 years, over 9000 significant pipeline accidents occurred, with 548 deaths, $85 billion damages. In 2016 alone, 220 significant spills were recorded.
  • Climate science is clear that we must make the complete transition to renewable energy, ideally by 2030,  Thus the science dictates we build NO new fossil fuel infrastructure now, and that our investment must be in building up renewable energy sources and the smart grid.  Commitment to a pipeline like DAPL for 30 years is totally contraindicated and dangerous to the survival of human civilization. 
Therefore, we call on Wells Fargo, a major bank financing the DAPL project, to immediately cease providing funds utilized for the construction of this pipeline.  As a good corporate citizen, Wells Fargo should no longer provide funds for a project which is damaging to the Standing Rock Sioux and all citizens of the United States.
