Letter to Senator Cornyn

At the November 13th meeting of the Waco Friends of Peace at Poppa Rollo’s Pizza, the following letter to Senator John Cornyn was circulated among the attendees and signed by about 25 people:

The Honorable Senator John Cornyn
517 Hart Senate Office Bldg.
Washington, D.C., 20510

Dear Senator Cornyn,

As citizens of the state of Texas, we call on you to vote AGAINST any bill or statement that calls for the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada to Texas.  The reasons for our opposition include:

Utilization of the Tar Sands crude would produce a massive volume of greenhouse gases, precluding a successful fight against global warming.

Completion of the pipeline would add to the destruction of the natural beauty of the Canadian tar  sands sites, including First Nation property.

The pipeline company has a horrible safety record, with 14 recent spills.  A spill or leak on this pipeline route would endanger vital natural resources in the USA, including the Ogallala aquifer. Previous spills of dilbit have produced severe long term damage, on the Kalamazoo River and in Mayflower, Arkansas.

The financial benefit of the pipeline would accrue largely to TransCanada only, with just 35 permanent jobs created in the USA.The Tar Sands product is destined for export, thus not benefitting US oil security.

The refinery site on the Gulf Coast would suffer more air pollution, and greater deaths in this “cancer alley” region.  Construction of the pipeline would commit the USA to 50 years of further production of fossil fuels, when the IPCC scientists have clearly stated we must quickly convert from these fuels to clean, renewable energy sources.

Our focus and resources must instead go to advancement of renewable energy production.

As our Senator, we call on you to vote AGAINST this destructive and unnecessary pipeline.

Sincerely,

Email to anorthc@aol.com to be placed on the Friends of Peace email list.
